TBT – Pieced Star

Happy Thursday!

These blocks are starting to get intricate! The Pieced Star is such a beautiful design. You can find the tutorial on Penny Rose Fabrics blog for Traditional Block Thursday.

The Pieced Star uses both flying geese units and half square triangles and I really enjoyed the time I put into this block. The tutorial uses two shades, Tan and Cream. For my block, I started with a monochromatic approach using purple; however, I couldn’t resist the blue print with the pink flowers. I also love how the diamond print in the dark purple is replicated in the design of the half square triangles.

TBT – Variable Star

Happy Thursday!

Hurray for the first day of October and we’re finally out of 90 degree temps here in Texas!

Today I completed my Variable Star block, also known as Sawtooth Star or Evening Star. I had hoped to complete this block last week, but was busy completing the Mouse Camp Quilt. The Variable Star block was a breeze to work through. It only required 4 flying geese units, a center square, and background squares. I didn’t have enough of one fabric to make the star, so I went with a scrappy green star on a blue background. From my selection of green reproduction fabric, I focused on light green hues and small, dense prints to keep the star as harmonious as possible. I alternated the points, each pulling yellow and pink from the center square. I’m really happy how lovely it turned out!

TBT – Flying Geese & Dutchman’s Puzzle

Happy Thursday!

Wow, this week is really flying by! Speaking of flying, this past weekend I completed two tutorials by Penny Rose Fabrics for Traditional Block Thursday, Flying Geese and Dutchman’s Puzzle. I had some previous experience making Flying Geese with my Sunburst Blocks, so these were a breeze to make. I had so much fun going through my reproduction fabrics since these blocks allowed me to be more scrappy in my selections. Both blocks utilize Flying Geese, but based on the color and orientation of the geese, you can capture a whole new look and feel.

Flying Geese – I was able to utilize scraps from previous blocks to help unify the quilt once it’s all put together!
