As you know, I love to sew and quilt…but I also enjoy cross-stitching! I wish I worked on it more, but as soon as I learned how to use a sewing machine, it’s been hard to stop 😀 I have so many projects I want to complete and quilts to make, but I need to continue working on my, going on 2 years, cross-stitch, lol.
I started this project as a birthday present for my mom. I thought, Eh, I can probably complete this in 3-4 months. Ha, no way! I chose a very demanding piece from Scarlet Quince, and probably more geared to experienced stitchers. I joke with her that I will have it completed as a retirement gift…at the pace I’m going….
If you’ve never heard of Scarlet Quince, I definitely recommend you check it out! You can get almost any fine art piece translated into a cross stitch pattern. This results in a completed project that looks like a painting when viewed from a distance. There are so many patterns I have saved in anticipation to complete this one and start a new one.
Now, while I would like to show you where I’m at and let you guess as I continue the process…I think that would be just rude of me since it could very well take me another year or 2 to complete! I feel that if I do share my cross stitch now, it will inspire me to continue working on it. Maybe I can trade weekends — one weekend sew/quilt, the next weekend stitch. The larger the gaps of time, the more difficult it is to count and find my place where I left off on the cross stitch.
So here goes, this is where I’m at! I have about 4 3/8″ x 14″ sewn on 18-count Aida fabric and the completed project will finish at 20″ x 15″ (laughing at myself). For those who want to see the final turn-out, here’s the pattern: Passion Flowers and Hummingbirds by Martin Johnson Heade. I have all the materials I need and there’s simply no excuse to put this off any longer!

That is an impressive undertaking! It is hard when there are so many fun and distracting types of projects out there. My worst was a needlepoint that took me 10 years to complete, so you are already ahead of the game.

Thank you! Haha, I hope to complete it in 2 years or less, we’ll see. Tempted to buy another Scarlet Quince pattern, but I think I’ll wait until I’m at least 75% done. That would be a great motivator too 🙂

It looks lovely. I love the detail. It will look amazing when it is done. I have lots of projects that I have started and not finished. I just keep telling myself we do hobbies because they are fun and if something doesn’t get finished it doesn’t get finished. Rotating it in with your other hobbies is a good idea and once you see your progress you might be inspired to work on it more.

Thank you so much! I think I currently have 5 WIP projects, lol…3 from this year. I do enjoy rotating projects because it keeps the hobby fun and exciting. You don’t want to get frustrated or burnt out; a fresh start on a different day is all you need to get motivated or inspired 🙂
Yes, seeing my progression and having the opportunity to share my work with you guys is another big motivator to keep working!!
